Four things great leaders taught us about project management

Would you believe me if I said that 55% of IT projects fail? According to, that’s their latest report.

Fear not! If you’re about to fall off the schedule, budget or quality cliff edge on your project, here are a few transferable pearls of wisdom from four great leaders.

Make the complex simple. Take it from a master of simplicity, Steve Jobs; there is addition in subtraction. Projects can become incredibly complex. Look to remove the complexity of projects, in terms of reducing the number of steps to complete a stage and by reducing the constituent parts required for completion.

Know your team’s limitations. ‘If you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman,’ Margaret Thatcher once famously said. Ignore the gender reference and it’s clear that she thinks some people are better at one thing than another. Create a team which is complementary and collaborative.

Let purpose fuel performance. For Indra Nooyi of PepsiCo, purpose is everything when it comes to performance. So much so that she has a slogan ‘Performance with Purpose’ which sets out clear goals. Be clear about what you are trying to achieve at the beginning.

Set aggressive goals and commit to measuring them. Abigail Johnson of Fidelity Investments uses goal setting for a clearer focus, optimised resources, and better decision making to name but a few. Look at things like business requirements, progress, and budget to see the benefits you’re realising.
